"GERTRUDE"

During another early  Irvine Fine Arts Center  workshop, I sculpted a model who was in her 70's. Not being from the "iPod" generation, she tried  desperately to stay awake during the two hours of each session (with breaks). 

This model got me to wondering why anyone would want a portrait bust. When I engaged her in conversation, she came alive and had a sweet smile that was never captured and therefore lost for all time in this piece. Even a "Sunday Best" hat still left her looking lonely and sad.
